Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that spreads through standing water, damp soil, and contact with wildlife — all common in Florida’s climate. Because of this, we consider leptospirosis a core vaccine for dogs in our area, recommended regardless of a dog’s specific lifestyle. It can cause serious illness and, in some cases, is life-threatening.
How dogs are exposed
Leptospirosis spreads through contact with infected urine, contaminated water, or soil — including puddles, ponds, and damp yards. Florida’s year-round warm climate, standing water, and active wildlife population make this an ongoing risk for dogs here, even those that live mostly indoors.
What it can cause
- Fever and lethargy
- Vomiting and loss of appetite
- Kidney and liver damage
- In severe cases, organ failure and death
Leptospirosis can also spread from dogs to people, making prevention important for the whole household.
