Why it matters
Florida law requires rabies vaccination for cats, including indoor-only cats. Rabies spreads through bites or saliva from infected animals, including bats that may enter homes.
Vaccinating your cat:
- Protects against a fatal disease
- Helps protect people and other pets
- Keeps your cat in compliance with Florida law
- Reduces the risk of quarantine or euthanasia after a bite
Requirements
Florida law requires all cats 4 months or older to be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian.
- First booster: 1 year after initial vaccine
- Future boosters: every 1–3 years, depending on the vaccine label
Indian River County also requires current rabies vaccination to get or renew a pet license.
How it works at Mermaid SANDS
Rabies vaccination is offered as an add-on for cats already scheduled for spay, neuter, or dental cleaning. Not offered as a standalone visit.

What to expect
- Vaccine given by trained staff
- Pet monitored for immediate reactions
- You receive a rabies certificate by email
Rabies tags are not issued on-site — obtained through Indian River County using your certificate.
