A bacterial infection affecting the upper respiratory tract. Spreads easily through air and direct contact between dogs. Often mild in healthy adults, but can be more serious in puppies, seniors, or immune-compromised dogs.
Why it Matters
Reduces risk of infection, severity of illness, and spread between dogs. More relevant for dogs that:
- Visit Boarding or daycare
- Attend grooming appointments
- Go to dog parks or training classes
- Are regularly around other dogs
Symptoms
- Persistent, dry cough
- Gagging or retching
- Nasal discharge
- Mild lethargy
Most dogs recover well, though symptoms can linger.
Booster schedule
- Initial dose, followed by annual boosters
- Immunity generally lasts a year; some boarding facilities may still require a 6-month booster — check with your facility if this applies
