What Is FeLV/FIV Testing?

FeLV (feline leukemia virus) and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) are two viruses that can affect a cat’s immune system. Both are spread mostly through close contact with other cats, like bites or shared living spaces. Many cats with these viruses look and act completely healthy, so testing is the only way to know for sure.

Why We Test

We test before surgery because these viruses can affect how well your cat heals and how their body handles anesthesia. Knowing your cat’s status ahead of time helps us make the safest plan.

How It Works

If Your Cat Tests Positive

If your cat tests positive for FeLV or FIV, we’ll let you know right away and refer you to a full-service veterinary hospital for next steps and long-term care. Mermaid SANDS is a high-volume, limited-scope clinic — we’re not set up to manage ongoing treatment, but we’ll make sure you leave with a clear next step.

Add This to Your Visit

FeLV/FIV testing is available as an add-on when you schedule a spay, neuter, or dental cleaning for your cat.
