Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a contagious and incurable virus that weakens a cat’s immune system over time, making cats more vulnerable to infections and illness. It spreads through close contact between cats — sharing food and water bowls, grooming, bite wounds, and from mother to kitten.
This vaccine is considered core for all kittens under 1 year old, regardless of whether they’ll live indoors or outdoors. For adult cats, the need depends on lifestyle and exposure risk.
Testing comes first
Cats must test negative for FeLV before starting the vaccine series. If your cat’s FeLV status is unknown, testing is done first.
Is my adult cat at risk?
For cats over 1 year old, this vaccine is most useful if your cat:
- Spends time outdoors, even occasionally
- Lives with or is regularly near other cats of unknown FeLV status
- Has direct contact with cats who go outdoors
Adult cats that live strictly indoors with no exposure to other cats are at lower ongoing risk.
Booster schedule
- Initial series: 2 doses, given 3–4 weeks apart, after a confirmed negative FeLV test
- First booster: 1 year after the initial series
- After that: annually for cats with ongoing exposure risk, or every 2–3 years for lower-risk adult cats
How it works at Mermaid SANDS
Offered as an add-on for cats already scheduled for spay, neuter, or dental cleaning. Not offered as a standalone visit. If your cat’s FeLV status hasn’t been tested, we can test and vaccinate as part of the same visit.

- Are already scheduled for a primary procedure
- Are healthy at the time of vaccination
- Have a confirmed negative FeLV test
