About Us

Our Mission

The COVID-19 pandemic brought an unprecedented wave of pet ownership. More than 23 million pets were adopted in the first year alone, while the veterinary workforce grew by just 500 doctors nationwide — a ratio of 46,000 new pets for every veterinarian added. Locally, this shortage has meant longer wait times, reduced access, and fewer services available to families and shelters.
Mermaid SANDS was created to expand access to essential veterinary care in a way that supports pets, families, and the broader community. Our mission is to provide affordable, high-quality preventive and start-of-life services so that no pet is left without the basics they need to thrive.

How We Deliver on the Mission

Our model is simple and efficient by design:

● Focused scope: We provide only the most universally needed services — spay and neuter procedures, dental cleanings, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention.

● Eligibility: We serve healthy young pets, keeping our patient population consistent and our procedures safe and efficient.

● Preparation & aftercare: Families receive clear instructions online and in written packets, reducing in-clinic time and ensuring a smooth process from start to finish.

● Doctor-centered efficiency: Our veterinarians spend their time where it matters most — performing procedures and protecting more pets, rather than repeating the same information in lengthy one-on-one conversations.

This model allows Mermaid SANDS to keep costs low, maintain high medical standards, and provide measurable value to donors who want their support to create real impact.

“We believe no family should be priced out of preventive veterinary care — that’s why Mermaid SANDS delivers affordable, high-quality essentials for pets in Indian River County.”

Our Approach to Access

At Mermaid SANDS, our mission is to make essential veterinary care more accessible to more pets — without adding unnecessary barriers for families. That’s why we do not require means testing. We believe every pet deserves a healthy start in life, and our efficiency comes from focusing on the care itself, not from asking families to prove financial need.

Our streamlined process ensures fairness and consistency. Clients receive clear preparation and aftercare instructions online and in easy-to-follow handouts, so veterinarians can dedicate their expertise to surgeries and preventive treatments. This approach allows us to help more pets, reduce costs, and give families reliable guidance they can trust.

Mermaid SANDS isn’t designed to replace the comprehensive, full-service experience. It’s built to deliver affordable, high-quality basics in a straightforward way. That balance lets us maximize every donated dollar while ensuring more pets — regardless of their family’s income — receive the care they need.

Mosites About Us Picture

About the Founder:

Dr. Peter Mosites, DVM

I founded Mermaid Vet Hospital in 2020, at a time when the world — and veterinary medicine — faced extraordinary challenges. Through a clear vision, disciplined execution, and an unwavering commitment to medical excellence, that practice grew from scratch into a thriving cornerstone of veterinary care in Vero Beach. Its success is proof that resilient, principled leadership can create stability and growth even in uncertain times.

My background with the U.S. Army Reserve, including my 2022 deployment as Officer in Charge of veterinary operations during Operation Inherent Resolve, reinforced the values of discipline, preparation, and accountability — qualities I bring to every aspect of veterinary medicine and leadership.

At Mermaid Vet Hospital, my focus is on enhancing what the veterinary experience can be. With Mermaid SANDS, that focus is on expanding access to care in ways that serve both pets and the community, while ensuring every donated dollar delivers maximum impact.

Mermaid SANDS was born out of this vision: to meet a clear need for a cost-effective, high-volume clinic that provides real value to families without compromising medical standards or the well-being of the veterinary team. As both a veterinarian and entrepreneur, I am committed to building organizations that are operationally sound and create lasting impact for pets, people, and the profession.
