What is a microchip?

A microchip is a tiny electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is placed just under your pet’s skin.

The chip:

  • Contains a unique identification number
  • Can be scanned by veterinarians, shelters, and animal control
  • Links your pet to your contact information in a national registry

A microchip is not a GPS device and does not track your pet’s location—but it provides a reliable way to identify them if they are found.

Why microchipping matters

Pets can become lost for many reasons:

  • Doors left open
  • Storms or loud noises
  • Accidental escapes
  • Disasters or emergencies

Microchipped pets are significantly more likely to be reunited with their families than pets without permanent identification.

Microchipping provides peace of mind that lasts for your pet’s lifetime.

When is microchipping typically done?

Microchipping is often performed:

  • At the time of spay or neuter surgery
  • During other scheduled procedures
  • When pets are already receiving care under anesthesia or restraint

Because it’s quick and permanent, microchipping is commonly paired with other essential services.

How microchipping works at Mermaid SANDS

Mermaid SANDS focuses on high-impact primary procedures, such as spay, neuter, and dental cleanings.

For that reason, microchipping is offered as an add-on service for pets already scheduled for a primary procedure. This allows us to provide essential identification while maintaining an efficient and sustainable care model.

Microchipping is not offered as a standalone appointment at this time.

Is microchipping painful?

Microchipping is a brief procedure that most pets tolerate very well.

When performed:

  • During anesthesia, pets do not feel the placement
  • During awake procedures, it is similar to a quick injection

The chip remains in place for life and does not require replacement or maintenance.

What happens after microchipping?

After placement:

  • The microchip is registered with your contact information
  • You’ll receive details on how to keep your information up to date

Keeping your contact information current is just as important as having the microchip itself.

Is this service a good fit for my pet?

Microchipping may be added to your pet’s visit if they:

  • Are already scheduled for a primary procedure
  • Meet basic health and safety requirements

Eligibility is reviewed during scheduling to ensure microchipping is appropriate.
