A proactive step that protects your dog’s health and supports a calmer future

Choosing surgery for your dog isn’t something most pet owners take lightly. It’s normal to have questions about safety, recovery, and whether spaying is the right decision.

Spaying is a common, preventative procedure that supports long-term health while helping reduce unplanned litters in our community.

What spaying means for your dog

A dog spay is a surgical procedure that removes the ovaries (and usually the uterus), preventing pregnancy and eliminating heat cycles.

For many dogs, spaying can:

  • Prevent heat-related behaviors and mess
  • Reduce the risk of uterine infections
  • Significantly lower the risk of mammary cancer when done at an appropriate age
  • Eliminate the possibility of unplanned litters

It’s a decision that supports both your dog’s health and responsible pet ownership.

A note about behavior and spaying

Spaying affects reproductive hormones, but not all behavior concerns are hormone-related.

Spaying is not a replacement for:

  • Training
  • Socialization
  • Behavior modification

Some behaviors are learned, environment-related, or rooted in anxiety. Spaying can be part of a broader plan—but it isn’t a cure-all.

What to expect on surgery day

We focus on keeping the process clear, efficient, and centered on your dog’s safety.

Your dog is evaluated beforehand to ensure they’re healthy for anesthesia

Surgery is performed under anesthesia with close monitoring
Pain management is provided for comfort during recovery
You’ll receive detailed instructions for care at home

Because a spay is an abdominal procedure, recovery typically involves a slightly longer rest period than neuter surgery.

Recovery at home

After surgery, your dog should be kept calm, indoors, and under close observation while healing takes place.

During recovery:

  • Leash walks only for bathroom breaks
  • No running, jumping, or rough play
  • Use an e-collar at all times to prevent licking or chewing at the incision
  • Monitor the incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge, or opening

Your dog will have sutures in place that are absorbable and do not need to be removed. Even though the sutures dissolve on their own, proper rest and protection are essential for healing.

We recommend a follow-up visit with your regular veterinarian around 14 days after surgery to ensure the incision has healed appropriately before resuming normal activity or discontinuing the e-collar.

If you have concerns during recovery, contact your primary veterinarian for guidance.
