A simple procedure that supports your dog’s health and your peace of mind

Neutering is one of the most common veterinary procedures, and when done thoughtfully, it’s a safe and responsible way to support your dog’s health and your household.

What neutering means for your dog

A dog neuter is a routine surgical procedure that prevents reproduction by removing the testicles. It can also reduce certain hormone-driven behaviors that develop or worsen over time.

For many dogs, neutering may help reduce:

  • Roaming and escape behaviors
  • Marking
  • Some hormone-related behaviors

It also lowers the risk of certain health conditions later in life and helps prevent unplanned litters in the community.

A note about behavior and training

While neutering can influence hormone-driven behaviors, not all behavior concerns are caused by hormones.

Neutering is not a replacement for:

  • Training
  • Socialization
  • Behavior modification

Some behaviors are learned, environment-related, or rooted in anxiety. Neutering can be part of a broader plan—but it isn’t a cure-all.

What to expect on surgery day

We keep the process straightforward and focused on your dog’s safety.

  • Your dog is evaluated beforehand to ensure they’re healthy for anesthesia
  • The procedure is performed under anesthesia with close monitoring
  • Pain control is provided to keep your dog comfortable
  • You’ll receive clear instructions for at-home recovery

Most dogs recover quickly and return to normal routines with only short-term activity restrictions.

Recovery at home

After surgery, your dog should be kept calm, indoors, and under close observation while healing takes place.

During recovery:

  • Leash walks only for bathroom breaks
  • No running, jumping, or rough play
  • Use an e-collar at all times to prevent licking or chewing at the incision
  • Monitor the incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge, or opening

Your dog will have sutures in place that are absorbable and do not need to be removed. Even though the sutures dissolve on their own, proper rest and protection are essential for healing.

We recommend a follow-up visit with your regular veterinarian around 14 days after surgery to ensure the incision has healed appropriately before resuming normal activity or discontinuing the e-collar.

If you have concerns during recovery, contact your primary veterinarian for guidance.
