Distemper Combo Vaccine for Dogs

Core protection against serious canine diseases in Vero Beach, Florida

The Distemper Combo, or DHPP, vaccine is a core vaccine for dogs

Meaning it protects against several serious and highly contagious diseases that are widespread in the environment. At Mermaid SANDS, we provide the DHPP vaccine for dogs as part of a focused care model that supports pets and families throughout Vero Beach and Indian River County.

What is the DHPP vaccine?

DHPP is a combination vaccine that protects dogs against four major diseases:

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza

These diseases can cause severe illness, long-term complications, and in some cases, death—especially in puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

What diseases does the DHPP vaccine protect against?

Canine Distemper

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

It can cause:

  • Coughing and nasal discharge
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Seizures and neurologic damage

Distemper is often fatal and has no cure—prevention through vaccination is critical.

Canine Hepatitis (Adenovirus)

Canine hepatitis is caused by adenovirus and primarily affects the liver but can also impact the kidneys and eyes.

It can lead to:

  • Fever and abdominal pain
  • Liver damage
  • Bleeding disorders

Vaccination protects against this serious and sometimes life-threatening disease.

Canine Parvovirus

Parvovirus is an extremely contagious virus that attacks the intestinal tract and immune system.

It commonly causes:

  • Severe vomiting and diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Rapid decline, especially in puppies

Parvo is widespread in the environment and can be fatal without aggressive treatment.

Canine Parainfluenza

Parainfluenza is a respiratory virus that contributes to canine infectious respiratory disease, often referred to as kennel cough.

While usually less severe on its own, it can:

  • Cause coughing and respiratory illness
  • Increase the risk of secondary infections
  • Spread quickly in areas where dogs gather

How often is the DHPP vaccine given?

The DHPP vaccine is typically given as a series in puppies, followed by booster vaccinations as dogs mature.

  • Puppies will receive 3-4 vaccinations each at least 3 weeks apart
  • Adult dogs will receive a booster every 1-3 years, depending on their history and the vaccine used

Your dog’s age and vaccination history are reviewed to determine:

  • Whether a booster is needed
  • Appropriate timing for vaccination

This ensures protection while maintaining safety.

How DHPP vaccination works at Mermaid SANDS

Mermaid SANDS focuses on high-impact primary procedures, such as spay, neuter, and dental cleanings.

For that reason, the DHPP vaccine is offered as an add-on service for dogs already scheduled for a primary procedure. This focused approach allows us to:

  • Operate efficiently and safely
  • Keep essential care accessible
  • Serve more dogs in our local community

DHPP vaccines are not offered as standalone appointments at this time.

Is this service a good fit for my dog?

The DHPP vaccine may be added to your dog’s visit if they:

  • Are already scheduled for a primary procedure
  • Are healthy at the time of vaccination

Eligibility is reviewed during scheduling to ensure vaccination is appropriate.

What to expect at your dog’s visit

When DHPP vaccination is added to a scheduled procedure:

  • The vaccine is administered by trained veterinary staff
  • Your dog is monitored for any immediate reactions
  • Vaccine records are documented for your files

Most dogs tolerate the DHPP vaccine very well, with mild and temporary side effects if any.

Taking the next step

If your dog is scheduled for a spay, neuter, or dental procedure, the DHPP vaccine can be added to their visit.
