A preventative step that protects your cat’s health and well-being

Spaying your cat is a proactive decision that supports long-term health and helps prevent unplanned litters. While surgery can feel intimidating, spaying is a common and well-understood procedure with meaningful benefits.
At Mermaid SANDS, we provide safe, accessible spay services designed with your cat’s well-being in mind.

What spaying means for your cat

A feline spay is a surgical procedure that removes the ovaries (and usually the uterus), preventing pregnancy and eliminating heat cycles.

Spaying can:

  • Eliminate heat-related behaviors such as vocalizing and restlessness
  • Prevent uterine infections
  • Reduce the risk of mammary cancer
  • Prevent unplanned litters

It’s a decision that benefits both your cat and the community.

A note about behavior

Spaying affects reproductive hormones, but not all behavior concerns are hormone-related.

Spaying is not a substitute for:

  • Environmental enrichment
  • Stress reduction
  • Behavior support

Some behaviors are unrelated to reproductive hormones and may require additional guidance.

What to expect on surgery day

We focus on safety, comfort, and clear communication.

  • Your cat is evaluated beforehand to ensure they’re healthy for anesthesia
  • Surgery is performed under anesthesia with close monitoring
  • Pain management is provided to support recovery
  • You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions

Because a spay is an abdominal procedure, recovery typically requires a short period of rest.

Recovery at home

After surgery, your cat should be kept indoors, calm, and under close observation while healing takes place.

During recovery:

  • Limit activity and prevent jumping or rough play
  • Keep your cat indoors until fully healed
  • Use an e-collar at all times to prevent licking or chewing at the incision
  • Monitor the incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge, or opening

Your cat will have sutures in place that are absorbable and do not need to be removed. Even though the sutures dissolve on their own, healing still takes time.

We recommend a follow-up visit with your regular veterinarian around 14 days after surgery to confirm the incision has healed properly before discontinuing the e-collar or allowing normal activity to resume.

If you notice anything that concerns you during recovery, contact your primary veterinarian for guidance.
