A simple procedure that supports your cat’s health and your home

Caring for a cat means planning ahead—even when it comes to procedures you hope you’ll never have to think much about. Neutering is a routine, preventative surgery that supports your cat’s long-term health and helps prevent unwanted behaviors and litters.
At Mermaid SANDS, we focus on providing safe, accessible neuter services so more cats can receive the care they need.

What neutering means for your cat

A feline neuter is a surgical procedure that removes the testicles, preventing reproduction and reducing hormone-driven behaviors.

For many cats, neutering can help:

  • Reduce spraying and strong urine odor
  • Decrease roaming and escape behaviors
  • Lower aggression related to hormones
  • Prevent unplanned litters

It’s a decision that benefits your cat, your household, and the broader community.

A note about behavior

Spaying affects reproductive hormones, but not all behavior concerns are hormone-related.

Spaying is not a substitute for:

  • Environmental enrichment
  • Stress reduction
  • Behavior support

Some behaviors are unrelated to reproductive hormones and may require additional guidance.

What to expect on surgery day

Our process is designed to be efficient, safe, and low-stress.

  • Your cat is evaluated beforehand to ensure they’re healthy for anesthesia
  • Surgery is performed under anesthesia with close monitoring
  • Pain management is provided
  • You’ll receive clear instructions for recovery at home

Most cats recover quickly and resume normal activity within a short period.

Recovery at home

After surgery, your cat should be kept indoors, calm, and under close observation while healing takes place.

During recovery:

  • Limit activity and prevent jumping or rough play
  • Keep your cat indoors until fully healed
  • Use an e-collar at all times to prevent licking or chewing at the incision
  • Monitor the incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge, or opening

Your cat will not have sutures, so none need to be removed. Even though there are no sutures, healing still takes time.

We recommend a follow-up visit with your regular veterinarian around 14 days after surgery to confirm the incision has healed properly before discontinuing the e-collar or allowing normal activity to resume.

If you notice anything that concerns you during recovery, contact your primary veterinarian for guidance.
