And one of the leading contributors to canine infectious respiratory disease, often referred to as “kennel cough.” At Mermaid SANDS, we offer the Bordetella vaccine for dogs as part of a focused care model that supports pets and families throughout Vero Beach and Indian River County.
What is Bordetella?
Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterial infection that affects the upper respiratory tract in dogs. It spreads easily through the air and direct contact, especially in places where dogs interact with other dogs.
While Bordetella is often mild in healthy adult dogs, it can cause more significant illness in:
- Puppies
- Senior dogs
- Dogs with weakened immune systems
Why the Bordetella vaccine matters
The Bordetella vaccine helps reduce:

The Bordetella vaccine is typically given:
- As an initial dose
- With periodic boosters, every 12 months, depending on exposure risk and facility requirements. While immunity has been shown to last a year, some facilities still require boosters every 6 months.

For that reason, the Bordetella vaccine is offered as an add-on service for dogs already scheduled for a primary procedure. This allows us to operate efficiently while continuing to expand access to essential care.
Bordetella vaccines are not offered as standalone appointments at this time.
